Garage Door Springs
Faults with your garage door are often down to an issue with the garage door springs. The springs are the most important part when it comes to the raising and lowering of the door. Due to being tightly wound, they are under immense pressure. If your garage door spring breaks, it is highly advised that you do not attempt to repair them yourself. Garage door springs are dangerous. It is always recommended calling in a professional for your own safety.
Spring Types
There are 2 types of garage door springs:

Torsion springs are attached just above the closed garage door

While extension springs are located above the upper tracks on both sides
Both can be dangerous if they break. To create the tension on the door that allows it to lift, the spring has to be wound very tightly. When they break, they snap with a great force and if someone is nearby when this happens, they could be seriously hurt. For this reason calling in a professional is recommended. Garage door springs do break, but they can be replaced fairly quickly and are relatively inexpensive.
When your garage door begins showing signs of age, let an experienced contractor inspect your garage door springs. If your garage door starts to become squeaky or making a loud noise it may need lubricating. Try applying a generous amount of garage door lubricant to the springs, but remember to avoid touching the springs, keep safety in mind at all times and to generally take great care, as with any DIY project, regardless of size.
If the spring breaks completely, or they continue to make noise after lubrication, call a professional to replace your garage door spring, as this may be the start of a serious problem.
Garage Doors are Heavy!
Garage doors are very heavy and can weigh in excess of 500lb. Its the spring that holds that great weight and lifts the door into the air, creating a serious amount of tension! You do not want that kind of pressure whipping at your body should it snap near you. A professional will have all the correct equipment in order to handle the job safely and install the right sized replacement spring. They will be able to balance the door properly too. They can wind the torsion springs correctly to avoid further issues and ensure your garage door and the springs are doing the job they were designed for.
A garage door with extension springs will have a safety cable on each side of the door running through the spring and attached to the wall or ceiling. These cables are an important safety feature. Safety cables help control a broken spring.
Know the signs
The best sign of a well functioning garage door is when it opens and closes smoothly and quietly. If it stops working correctly, the problem could be more serious. If the door continues to operate with difficulty, The problem may lie with the springs being out of balance. The problem will need fixing and certainly will not rectify itself. Failing to fix it could result in an escalating list of worn and broken parts and ultimately cost you a great deal of money!
The projected lifespan of a garage door torsion spring is between 7 and 10 years equating to around 10,000 to 15,000 open and close cycles. There are several factors which can cause the spring to break prematurely. These factors can include :
Excessive wear and tear
Impact damage to the door
Improper installation
Damage to other parts of the door
Door out of alignment or imbalanced
Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures
