Lubricating a Noisy Garage Door Properly
There are lots of factors that need to be taken into consideration in lubricating the door. First of all, we do not recommend lubricating the areas of a squeaking garage door using WD40 lubricants. A silicone spray or a lithium spray is advisable, whenever you need to lubricate parts of the garage door.
These include:
- Hinges
- Stems
- Chain rail
- Nubs
- Arm bar
- Metal rollers (that accompany ball bearings)
- Locks
Even though some components and parts of the garage door require lubrication, there are some parts that don’t need spraying with any kind of lubricants. These are parts such as the garage door track, bottom part, the spring and the chain.
Properly Cleaning of the Garage Door Track
When the garage door becomes sticky or noisy, you don’t need to spray any lubricants on the door track. Lubrication will not solve this issue. It is likely down to a build up of dirt and lubricant from other parts. Over time the build up will dry out and harden. Rather than lubricating the door track, it should be thoroughly cleaned. Appropriate cleaning of the garage door track involves basically wiping the inside part of the track using a moist cloth. Now clean and dry it off with a dry cloth. Should there be a need to use a solution to remove any sticky remains on the track, use a WD lubricant for better garage door care.
Weather Seals Installation
To aid you in your garage door care, weather seal installation can be quite useful for saving energy. They can prevent dampness from moving into the garage, as well as on the garage doorframe. If you do not have weather seals we recommend you get some. As part of your ongoing maintenance, wipe them with a damp cloth. Then dry them off. If they’re in bad shape, you should look into getting these replaced.
Realignment of the Garage Door Sensors
When the sensors of your garage door aren’t working properly, it is likely that the sensors have been knocked off track. This means the sensors will need realigning. Garage door sensor realigning simply requires carefully pushing the sensors into the correct position. The sensors ideal location should be facing one another. Whenever the sensors are not properly aligned, you will see a light indicator blinking. As soon as the sensors are placed correctly and realigned, a strong light indicator will suddenly replace the previous blinking light.
