Canopy or retractable?
There are two main types of up and over door. The right one depends on your driveway and whether you might want remote control.
Canopy doors
- The most simple and common type of door
- Maximum drive-through width when open
- The easiest door type to install
- When fully open, the door panel sticks out about a third in front of the frame
Retractable doors
- Simple and easy to install
- Slightly reduced drive-through width when open
- The easiest type to retro-fit with remote control
- When open, the door panel retracts fully into the garage
Single panel doors
A single panel door is made from one large solid panel. With jamb-type hardware, the door pushes up and overhead on hinges on both sides, but part of it swings out of the garage as it opens, so cars need to park a few feet back.
Track-type hardware avoids this. The door runs on a horizontal track on each side, with rollers at the top, so it lies fully inside the garage when open and you can park much closer to the door.
Steel stamped doors
Steel stamped construction is a cost-effective choice. Steel sheets are formed to look like a raised-panel wooden door, and are available insulated, uninsulated and double skinned.
A popular design imitates traditional carriage house doors, and some manufacturers clad the outside in composite or vinyl boards for the look of wood.

Up and over garage door FAQs
What is the difference between canopy and retractable doors?
A canopy door is the simplest type and gives the maximum drive-through width, but about a third of the door sticks out in front of the frame when it is open. A retractable door retracts fully into the garage, with a slightly reduced drive-through width, and is the easiest type to convert to remote control.
Can an up and over door be made electric?
Yes. Retractable up and over doors are the easiest to fit with a remote control system. We can advise on your door during a free survey.
Are steel up and over doors insulated?
Steel stamped doors are available insulated, uninsulated and double skinned, so you can choose the level of insulation you need.
